Licorice root grows in Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, having been used for centuries for several purposes. The deglycyrrhised version of licorice root has had the compound triterpenoid glycyrrhizin removed. Glycyrrhizin provides sweetness but when used in excess it can cause side effects.
